Fayetteville Chess Club

1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 c5 3 d5 b5 4 cxb5 Qa5!? is the Fayetteville Countergambit, and the theory on it is free. The Fayetteville Chess Club publishes an opening library under its own masthead on a hand-built site: roughly three dozen systems for White and Black, set out as ECO-style lines with illustrative games, about half of them backed by a printable pamphlet or a downloadable games file, none of it held back for members. Several of the openings are named for the club’s own country — the Hogeye Gambit, the Countergambit above, its relative the Ozark Defense — and the pages are illustrated with a cartoon hillbilly and an Ozark Howler. The club plays Sundays at 1pm “to whenever” in the lower annex of the Fayetteville Public Library. The ladder is do-it-yourself: you challenge anyone up to three places above you, play three games at fifteen minutes with a ten-second increment, touch-move, and post the new standings in the Facebook group yourself; go two weeks without a game and you can be demoted. Its tournaments are built for the bottom of the field as deliberately as the top: the 2024 Summer Classic ran Open, Intermediate (U1600) and Beginner (U1200) sections for 58 players, and the Intermediate section was won 5/5 by a player in his first ever tournament. When Taco Bell sponsored the 2023 Winter Classic, the club’s own writeup signed off “Live Mas!” If you want to play rated chess and have never had a first tournament to walk into, this club builds one with a section for you. The club’s page also puts summer play at Gulley Park, from 4:30 “till whenever,” staged in support of getting permanent chess tables installed there. That page is undated, though, and it also lists a Wednesday 7pm session at the Arkansas Justice Reform Coalition, 203 N. College Ave., without saying which schedule is current, so call David Morgan at (479) 453-9984 before you go.

HoursSundays 1pm 'to whenever' at the Fayetteville Public Library, 401 W. Mountain St., in the new (lower) annex building - the library's own Sunday public hours are 1-5pm. The club's home page also carries a Wednesday 7pm session at the Arkansas Justice Reform Coalition Community Hub, 203 N. College Ave., every Wednesday except the first of the month, and summer play at Gulley Park starting 4:30 'till whenever'. All of it was live on the club's own page on 2026-09-18 and the club never says which of the two indoor schedules supersedes the other (its site publishes two out-of-sync device variants of the same page), so confirm before going: David Morgan, (479) 453-9984.
