Maxine's Tap Room

Maxine Miller opened this little brick bar in downtown Fayetteville in 1950, and seventy-six years on it is still Maxine's — same building, same name. What changed is the pour: the dive-era tap room now builds house cocktails on syrups of local honey, hibiscus, and raisin, with local beer alongside for anyone who comes for the old reasons. It gathers people on less than that. The room is open, and that turns out to be enough. Esquire thought so too, naming it among the best bars in America in 2019 on a list chosen for rooms that deepen a sense of community and make everyone feel at home. Come for the honey syrup.
