Sixteen years in, Natural State Comedy still has no fixed room, so what it keeps is the door, and it keeps it in writing. Turn up thirty minutes before the show, put your name on the host's sheet, and draw a number for the running order. You get five minutes, a light flashed at you with one minute left, and no minimum: two or three minutes is fine for a first try. The terms of the stage are written down the same way. No topic is off limits and no language is censored, and then it names the line: misogyny, bigotry, homophobia, racist material, or stage time spent going after the crowd or another comic. Cross it and you get a warning, or a ban from every event it runs. Getting onto a local bill asks for a set, not a resume. A phone video shot at one of its open mics is enough, no credits or bio expected, and a more experienced comic in the scene can vouch for you. Four comics started it in 2010 as Comedians NWA because, by their own account, there was no local scene to work in. The shows stopped in 2020 and came back in 2021 under the current name, in borrowed rooms as ever: Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. at Nomads Trailside in Fayetteville, Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at New Province Brewing in Rogers, free to watch and free to perform. Go to see the region's own comics work five minutes at a time. Go thirty minutes early to be one of them.
