Once a year, Ozark Natural Foods reads its books to the people who own it. At the September 2024 owners meeting the co-op counted, by its own tally, 103 vendors on the shelves, 12,271 member-owners, and $11.5 million in 2023 sales; the 2025 meeting added 1,132 members, 50 more vendors, and a starting wage moved to $15. The shoppers are the shareholders — member-owners elect the board, hold office, and sit on its committees — and ownership lands in the aisles as a monthly rhythm: 15 percent off wellness the first Wednesday, 10 percent off taproom drinks the second Tuesday, 15 percent off bulk the third Thursday. The co-op names and places the farms behind the produce — Dripping Springs Garden in Carroll County, where Mark Cain has farmed since 1978; Ames' Orchard in Washington County; Three Springs out of Oaks — and spare cents rounded up at the register join direct donations in local giving, $50,076 raised in the year to that 2024 meeting, routed to nonprofits chosen by open application. The store building is a former IGA grocery on College Avenue that sat abandoned before Modus Studio's 2020 rebuild. The rebuild re-stained the old masonry under raw steel, lined the inside with Arkansas pine, and put a 117-foot covered porch out front, which the firm calls the region's largest. The porch keeps its own calendar: August 2026 alone held a two-day vintage market, a university sustainable-fashion market, a mini makers market, and live music. The hot bar and salad bar run seven days, and none of it requires joining: the door is everyone's.
